Reflection on Matthew 11:16-30

Then Jesus said, “Come to me all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and I will give you rest, Take my yoke upon you and let me teach you because I am humble and gentle in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus rebukes those who criticise Him for not being like John the Baptist, although the same people criticised John also.

He denounces the towns that rejected Him despite the miracles He had performed there.

Then He goes on to thank God for revealing His nature to the poor ad humble. He invites everyone to lay down their burden and come to Him.

Jesus is Lord like no other lord. He comes to save and to release people from their burdens rather than to impose new burdens.

The educated and the so-called wise people cannot see this, though. It is too simple for their world-view.

That is why Christians should not be too surprised when the leaders and the intelligentsia are so anti-gospel and anti-church. Their hard hearts simply cannot acknowledge sin and grace.

Father, it is a wonderful truth, almost too wonderful to grasp, that you love sinners and willingly forgive those who come to you. Thank you. Amen.
