Reflection on Psalm 72

May the king's rule be refreshing like the spring rain on freshly cut grass' like the showers that water the earth.

The wealth of the land is linked to the character of the king.

Solomon prays of rthe king to rule justly and for rain to fall ove rthe land.

The king will favour the weak and needy and so Solomon asks for God to bless the king and the land.

Christians are commanded to pray for rulers and all who hold positions of authority. In our culture we tend to be cynical and dismissive of leaders.

This psalm indicates that in praying for rulers to be just and righteous, we harvest a reward of prosperity for the whole nation.

As v. 19 says, “Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel, who does such wonderful things.”

Lord, may our leaders know your direction today and every day. I pray for Julia Gillard our Prime Minister who denies that you exist. Help her to leads the Government in righteousness. May she come to know you are Lord. Amen.
