Reflection on 1 Corinthians 12:12-31

Scripture
The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the Body of Christ.

Observation
Human bodies have many parts, each with a specific function. No part is less needed more than any other part.

Just as we accept our own bodies in all their diverse bits, so we should accept the Christ's Body in all its diversity.

We have all been baptised into one body by the one Spirit and we all share in the same Spirit,

God has established an order of priority in the church. He appoints people to different roles, equipping each for the role He has called them to. We should aspire to the gifts that will enable us to do the job God has called us to.

Application
This teaching about the Body is foundational for our understanding of the church. Contrary to the rampant individualism of the culture, we are reminded that we belong to each other. If we cut ourselves off from others, or cut others off from us, then we deprive ourselves of the gifts and graces that others have.

This passage reminds us that everyone has a part to play in the Kingdom. The usher and the preacher, the cleaner and the evangelist are all used by God for His purposes.

The challenge for all of us is to find out God's calling for us and to serve Him with all our heart.

Prayer
Father I thank you that despite my weaknesses ad limitations you have a plan and purpose for my life. Help me to live by your plan. Amen.
